Doyle Brunson is considered as the godfather of poker with ten bracelets, a WPT title and decades of success at the highest stakes. Brunson has announced his retirement from poker. This is after he was a professional player in the game for 62 years. He will muck his cards one last time at the end of the summer when he bids farewell to the felt that brought him fame, great legacy and success and this will be something that poker players will resonate with for decades to come.
Brunson will be getting into his last event at the World Series of Poker. This is the $10,000 No Limit 2-7 Single Draw and this will be as a late entrant on Day 2. As he was being interviewed about his retirement, he talked of his greatest memories and the way he would wish to be remembered. He pointed out that one of the reasons he will be retiring is because of his wife’s ill health and that he wants to stay with her for the duration of his or her life.
Doyle met his wife Louise in 1959 and they got married in August 1962. He added that he will not only be making his final appearance at the WSOP but he is also bidding farewell to his beloved high stakes games in Bobby’s Room. He said that he has no intentions of ever playing again and that these might be the last moments he spends with his wife. He added that every time he left the house he felt guilty.
Brunson won his 10th WSOP bracelet in 2005 and said that he still cares about the prestige that comes with the World Series of poker. He wishes that he tried harder in the early days to earn more bracelets. He pointed out that he viewed the tournaments as a way of getting players to come out to Las Vegas and he never cared much about them. In retrospect he wishes that he played more events since he would have won more than he did. But he adds that he did pretty well with cash games by skipping the World Series.
As he talks of the early days, he does not talk about the WSOP and what he is most proud of and he also does not mention about the big cash games he won. He only talks about the friends he made during this period and he mentions that he had a tight bond with the players that started playing in WSOP. When they met every year, it was like a reunion and at the moment he does not remember more than two people in the room. He sadly says that most of his friends he played with back in the early days of the WSOP have passed away.
Brunson has done great when it comes to poker, including making the game popular through his book; Super System and making appearances in major televised tournaments and cash games. He says that he would like to be remembered for the long period that he has played the game and the fact that he has been able to play the ultra high stakes for half a dozen decades.
